Oklahoma Driver Ed Course Details

Looking to get your Oklahoma learner’s permit or driver’s license? This course satisfies the mandated 30 hours of classroom training, including parent-taught instruction for the 55 hours of behind-the-wheel training required by the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (OK DPS) to get an Oklahoma driver’s license and/or driver’s permit.

Parent Taught Driver Education

The OK DPS allows first time drivers in Oklahoma to complete Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE) course in lieu of classroom or driving school instruction. This type of driver education requires the student’s biological parent, adoptive parent, parent by marriage, or legal guardian to provide behind-the-wheel instruction to the student. PTDE is convenient and more affordable for first time drivers to complete driver education on his/her schedule, with his/her parent or guardian guiding and teaching throughout the process.

Course Content

There are 12 modules in the online Parent-Taught Driver Education program. Content covered within the course includes topics such as: basic driving maneuvers, state laws, local ordinances, rules of the road, signs, signals, highway markings, highway design, familiarity with the Oklahoma Driver’s Manual, effects of alcohol and substance abuse on the driving process, and driving skills such as: starting, backing, parallel parking, vehicle right-of-way, etc.

Students must be at least 15 years old to enroll in driver education. Once you sign up, you are eligible to apply for your learner’s permit at 15 ½ with proof of either enrollment or completion. Your Parent-Taught Driver Education packet will have all the information you need to complete the next steps.

After getting your learner’s permit, you will be able to start the behind-the-wheel training with your parent or guardian. This training includes techniques that will help parents effectively teach you how to operate a vehicle on the road.
